Not only is it the world’s longest wine route, a whopping 850km, Route 62 has also been named the world’s best road trip destination by CNN Travel, offering a scenic alternative to the N2 highway. The famous Cape Route 62 is a tourist route connecting the Western and Eastern Cape. Nonceba offers them a place to stay, individual and family counselling, legal support, access to healthcare, educational programmes and victim empowerment groups. Most of the women with HIV are struggling to access healthcare and have received limited education and training. Nonceba aims to prevent violence through education, and offers early intervention services and treatment for severe cases of abuse and has a shelter for women who have survived domestic violence or have been victims of human trafficking. With the additional pressure on healthcare services globally, the Centre is working to ensure the safety of all of the women and children using its services. In addition to this, most of the women in the shelter are HIV positive and rely on Nonceba for access to healthcare. Women and girls in Khayelitsha are already vulnerable to intimate partner violence, the fear, tension and stress related to the COVID-19 outbreak will only intensify the risks they face. The Centre supports a community where there is high-population density, a high level of overcrowding and poverty that makes it extremely difficult to self-isolate. This is a difficult time for everyone, but services such as the Nonceba Family Counselling Centre are facing additional challenges.
